Muskies hold off resilient Rams

The Muskie boys’ hockey team kicked off the 2005-06 NorWOSSA regular season here Friday night with a 5-2 win over the Red Lake Rams.
The black-and-gold had jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening period, but the Rams battled back to tie the game at 2-2 in the early minutes of the second.
Despite Red Lake’s efforts to outplay and outshoot the black-and-gold, Fort High went ahead 3-2 midway through the period, then added two more before the intermission to lead 5-2.
Red Lake turned it up in the third period, causing the Muskies to scramble for the puck a bit more than usual.
Then with just over four minutes to go, Fort High was whistled for two minutes for roughing—giving the visitors a great chance to get back into the game.
But backed by great defence and a stellar goaltending performance by Richard Wierenga, the Muskies staved off the Rams.
The Muskies will look to improve to 2-0 in league play when they visit the Dryden Eagles tomorrow night.
The girls’ team also is heading to Dryden tomorrow to play their first regular-season game of the season.
