It took all of one play for the roof to cave in on the Muskie football team yet again.
In a battle of winless teams, the Kenora Broncos crushed Fort High 58-12 in WHSFL action there Friday.
“First play, 39 [running back Wesley Penner] just took the ball, our contain broke down, and he was gone down the sideline,” sighed Muskie head coach Mike Cuzzolino about Penner’s 67-yard jaunt to paydirt.
“Just devastating.”
Penner had a second touchdown later in the half as Kenora improved to 1-5 in the Currie Division (‘A’) while the Muskies fell to 0-5.
Fullback Pacey Wickham added two scoring runs in the first half while receiver Chase Neufeld and quarterback Rhett Zurkan, who took over early in the game after starter Dylan Andrews re-aggravated an ankle injury, had single rushing majors.
Muskie running back Dougie DeBernardeaux returned the subsequent kick-off after Zurkan’s touchdown 87 yards to the end zone to make it 42-6 at halftime.
Zurkan plunged in again from the one-yard line for the only points of the third quarter.
Dylan Woolsey added the other Muskie points in the fourth quarter when a pass that either was tipped by fellow receiver Riley Argue or a Kenora defender landed right in his arms for a 20-yard score.
A Jake Sullivan field goal and a rushing touchdown by Broncos’ running back Clark Boucha rounded out the scoring.
“I think the guys are working hard,” said Cuzzolino.
“But because we’re so young and inexperienced, they just don’t know how hard it is to win a football game,” he noted.
The Muskie will close out the regular-season this Friday at 3 p.m. when they host the first-place Dryden Eagles in the annual Homecoming game.
Dryden (6-0), coming off a 51-7 rout of the Tec Voc Hornets this past Friday, has outscored its opposition 276-53 so far this season, including a 50-0 whitewashing of the Broncos.
The Muskies should get a boost from the anticipated return of running back Sekina Scheibler for Friday’s game against the Eagles.
He was leading the team in rushing before getting knocked out of action with a foot injury in a 45-26 loss to the St. Norbert Celtics here back on Sept. 16.
