The first trip to Winnipeg for the Muskie football team this season is one they’ll quickly want to forget after falling 20-7 to the Daniel McIntyre Maroons on Friday.
Trailing 14-1 at halftime, with their lone point coming off a missed field goal attempt early in the second quarter, running back Cam Gobeil scored on a toss play in the third quarter to put Fort High down by a touchdown.
But the Maroons answered with a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
“It was kind of disappointing for us as I felt that was a winnable game for us when we were heading down there,” noted Muskie head coach Chad Canfield.
“A win would have put us in good shape in the standings, especially with some of the opponents that we have coming up on our schedule, but we really couldn’t get going on offence yet again,” he lamented.
“They [Daniel McIntyre] game-planned us really well and their coaches did a great job in doing that,” Canfield added.
With the loss, the black-and-gold dropped to 1-2 in the WHSFL’s Andy Currie ‘A’ Division to sit in an eight-team logjam for fourth place.
Fort High won’t have long to rest up for their next game, however, as they’ll be hosting the Tec Voc Hornets (1-1) here tomorrow at 3 p.m.
“This game tomorrow is going to dictate our season,” Canfield stressed. “It’s going to send us one way or the other way in the standings.
“And with two of the top teams in our division [Neelin and Steinbach] coming here after this game, we really need to get a win here,” he warned.
