After the lofty heights of the previous week, it was a painful plummet for the Muskie football squad on Friday.
Fort High (1-3) couldn’t build off its home-opening victory in its previous outing—losing 38-3 to the host Daniel McIntyre Maroons (2-2) in a key Andy Currie Division showdown.
“I’m trying to forget that game,” admitted Muskie head coach Mike Cuzzolino.
“We had a tough week of practice,” he added.
“Lots of kids were away so I don’t think we were as prepared as we should’ve been.”
The Muskies trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and 21-0 at the half.
Quarterback Brandon Whitecrow had a tough go of things in the teeth of a relentless Daniel McIntyre defence, which hassled him into three second-half interceptions.
But Cole Kowalski, fresh off his defensive player-of-the-week award, put in another outstanding effort in a losing cause.
He recovered two muffed punts by the Maroons and also snared his second interception in two games.
Cam Lidkea spoiled the shutout in the dying seconds with a 16-yard field goal set up on a fumble recovery by Gavin Richardson, which he ran back 26 yards.
The Muskies will look to get back on track this Friday against the College Lorette Collegiate Scorpions in their annual Homecoming game.
Kick-off is at 3 p.m. at Muskie Field.
