The Muskie boys’ hockey team couldn’t finish what they started over the weekend at the Piper Classic tournament in Winnipeg.
After going undefeated in round-robin play, the black-and-gold lost 5-4 to Stonewall in the semi-finals on Saturday and were eliminated from title contention.
Matt Hebert led the Muskies offensively against Stonewall with a pair of markers while Mitch Green and Ryan Witherspoon rounded out the scoring.
David Moen got the start in goal but was replaced midway through the game by Rich Wieringa.
The semi-final loss was a disappointing result given the Muskies’ strong play earlier in the tournament, including an opening 6-1 thrashing of St. James on Thursday night.
Witherspoon led the charge in that one, netting a hat trick, while Matt McLellan, Blake Wepruk, and Mike Jourdain added singles.
Wieringa picked up the win between the pipes.
The Muskies then completed the round-robin portion of the tournament with a pair of wins Friday—doubling Sisler 4-2 that afternoon before cruising to a 7-2 win over Silver Heights that night.
Brian Glavish, Joe Basaraba, Hebert, and Witherspoon tallied in the Sisler game while Wieringa earned the win.
In the nightcap, Riley Caul tallied twice while Basaraba, Witherspoon, Glavish Green, and Mike McCaig also scored en route to the blowout win over Silver Heights.
Moen picked up the win in goal.
The Muskies, sporting a 13-0-1 mark in NorWOSSA play, will look to remain undefeated when they host the winless Kenora Broncos (0-12) tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team (3-4-1) will be looking to avenge last week’s 5-4 loss to Kenora (3-5) when they host the Broncos tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
