Muskies fall in OFSAA opener

The Muskie boys’ soccer team began its quest for provincial glory on a losing note this morning, falling 1-0 to the St. Martin Mustangs of Mississauga in their Pool ‘C’ opener at the OFSAA ‘AA’ championships in Stratford.
“We came out a little bit flat and looked like a team that had just come off a 24-hour bus ride, which we were, but I thought we played pretty well overall,” said head coach Shane Beckett.
“You can’t be disappointed with a 1-0 loss to the third overall seed,” he noted. “But I would have liked to have seen a little bit of a quicker pace on our part.
“We also gave them a little too much space at times, and that’s what happened on the goal they scored about seven minutes into the second half,” Beckett added.
The black-and-gold, meanwhile, had little time to dwell on the loss, taking to the pitch to face the Denis O’Connor Chargers (Ajax) in their second round-robin match this afternoon.
The outcome wasn’t known as of press time.
“We just have to come out flying,” Beckett stressed prior to kick-off.
“We watched them [the Chargers] play here this
morning and they are a really talented team, but they do not like any sort of pressure or physical play,” he noted.
“We’re hoping that the guys can see that and we play like we did against Kenora in the NorWOSSA final last week.”
The Muskies will take on the Holy Trinity Tigers (Bradford) tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (EDT), then wrap up their round-robin slate at 2 p.m. against the Wellington Heights Wolverines.
The top two teams in each of the four pools will advance to the quarter-finals, which will be held tomorrow at 5:15 p.m.
The semi-finals then will take place Saturday at 9 a.m., with the championship game set for 1:30 p.m.
