The Muskie football team was able to cap an impressive season with a championship.
An electrified offence scored early and often and the defence got stops when it need to as the third-ranked Muskies snared their first-ever WHSFL title with a 65-49 win over the fourth-place Churchill Bulldogs in the Canad Inns Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.
The Muskies, who went 4-2 in the regular season in the six-team Currie Division before winning all three of their playoff games, and the underdog Bulldogs put on a show as their combined 114 points was the most ever scored in a WHSFL championship game.
The storyline for the Bulldogs entering the contest was whether or not they could keep up with a high-powered Muskies’ offence, led by Player-of-the-Year candidate Brady Meeks at quarterback.
Churchill had upset the previously undefeated Springfield Collegiate Sabres the week before in the semifinals and showed they had what it took to find the end zone, but were unable to match the electric quick-strike offence of the black-and-gold.
Meeks, one of a number of impact seniors for the Muskies, threw for a major while also rushing one in, while receiver Carson Noga had a massive pick-six to go with a receiving touchdown and rushing touchdown.
Offensive MVP Sean Huziak also hit paydirt four different times for Fort High, which led 36-22 at halftime.
The Bulldogs, despite playing with a smaller roster, showed a lot of heart with a number of players going both ways. Yves Amane was excellent, scoring three touchdowns along with over 200 yards rushing, while also earning the game’s defensive MVP award.
Wyatt Richards, who won the commissioner’s award for his side, and the Muskie defence stepped up when they needed to, however, recording a few key stops on third down en route to snaring the trophy.
