Muskies capture top seeds

Both Muskie soccer teams remained unbeaten in NorWOSSA play over the weekend in Dryden to earn the top seedings heading into the league finals this week.
The boys (5-0-1) blew out the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints 7-0 and then edged the defending champion Kenora Broncos 2-1. Meanwhile, the girls (6-0) enjoyed a pair of 2-0 wins over both the Saints and Broncos.
Tyler Barker and Simeon Nussbaumer scored for the Muskies in the first half against the Saints before Kyle McTavish, Tanner Kaemingh, Chris Faragher, Chris Plett, and Andrew Mueller added singles in the second.
After surrendering a 1-0 lead to the Broncos, Bryce Witherspoon tied the game before halftime, then Jeremy Wilson netted the winner late in the game off a nifty move in front of the goal.
“I was happy how, for the most part, we controlled the play against [the Broncos],” said co-coach Ben Andrusco. “It gives the team great confidence heading into the finals.”
In girls’ action, the Barton sisters—Carling and Sarah—each scored in the win over the Saints while Christin Thomson and Sarah Barton scored against the Broncos.
The tournament was changed to a one-day, two-game event after snowstorms in the Dryden area last week hampered field conditions.
The Muskies will begin pool play at the NorWOSSA championships Wednesday in Kenora. The semi-finals and finals are slated Thursday.
