It was the longest road trip of the season—and no doubt felt even longer coming home.
The Muskie football team travelled more than six hours by bus to Brandon, only to leave with a 34-0 loss to the host Neelin Spartans in WHSFL action Friday.
“Our offence sputtered big-time and their onside kicks really wore down our defence,” noted Muskie head coach Mike Cuzzolino, whose team fell to 0-3 in the Currie Division (‘A’) while the Spartans improved to 2-0.
Leading 14-0 at halftime, Neelin added three more majors in the second half.
They also attempted four onside kicks during the game—recovering two of them.
Muskie quarterback Brandon Whitecrow, coming off being named the division’s offensive player-of-the-week, had a tough time Friday.
He went just 5-for-18 passing for 35 yards and two interceptions while Fort High’s rushing managed only 57 yards in its first game without injured starting running back Sekina Scheibler.
The Muskies have the bye this week, then will be back in action Oct. 7 against the host Daniel McIntyre Maroons (Winnipeg) before visiting Kenora to face the Broncos on Oct. 14.
The Muskies don’t play at home again until their annual “Homecoming” game, when they host the Dryden Eagles in the regular-season finale Oct. 21.
