On a day that saw Mother Nature throw nearly every type of weather at them other than snow, the Muskie boys’ and girls’ soccer teams kicked off their NorWOSSA regular seasons on a successful note here yesterday.
The boys’ squad, looking to capture its third-straight league title, beat the Dryden Eagles 4-1 and the Kenora Broncos 2-1 to move atop the standings with a 2-0 record.
After allowing an early goal against the Eagles, the black-and-gold exploded on offence in the second half, dominating possession and scoring four times.
Brandon Sinclair, Colton Craig, Cam Gobeil, and Adam Stromberg were the Muskie goal scorers while Cody Kaus netted the lone marker for the Eagles.
Then against Kenora in the afternoon, the Muskies held the lead for most of the game after a Sinclair marker in the first half.
The Broncos tied the score late in the second half on a goal by Jordan Spencer. But with two minutes to go, Fort High regained the lead back for good as Craig capitalized on a corner kick from Sinclair to secure the win.
The Muskie girls, meanwhile, split their opening games yesterday. They blanked the Eagles 1-0 but then fell 2-1 to the Broncos, which left them at second place in the three-team loop with a 1-1 mark.
Maryam Seid’s strike on a free-kick early in the morning game proved to be the difference as the black-and-gold shut down any advances by the Eagles.
Then against the Broncos in the afternoon, the Muskies took an early lead on a Jessica Caul header.
But Kenora tied the game later in the first half on a penalty kick by Jodi Melillo.
Despite both team trading scoring chances throughout the second half, it looked as if the two sides were headed for a draw.
But Rylee Smith was able to work her way through the Muskie defence with a minute to go to give Kenora the win.
After heading to Kenora this weekend for a tournament, both teams will resume league play next Wednesday in Dryden.
