Three members of the Muskie track-and-field team turned in OFSAA-qualifying showings at the NWOSSAA championships in Thunder Bay this week.
Leading the way yesterday was Grade 10 student Jenny Hammond, who won the gold medal in the junior girls’ 800m race.
That victory earned her a direct entry into the OFSAA track-and-field finals in Oshawa on June 6-8, but she has elected not to compete.
Also earning the opportunity to possibly compete at the all-Ontarios were Grade 10 student Arthur Van Ael and Grade 12 competitor Jillian Bobczynski.
They finished in second place in the junior boys’ 3,000m race and the senior girls’ long jump, respectively.
With their runner-up finishes, both athletes are in the mix for the fourth and final spot for Northern Ontario in their events at OFSAA.
Those berths will be determined on the best time or distance among the second-place finishers from the NWOSSAA, NOSSA, and NEOAA regions.
As of press time, Van Ael had yet to find out if his time would earn him a provincial spot.
Bobczynski, meanwhile, already has elected to turn down a possible provincial appearance.
