The Muskie track-and-field team turned in strong performances across the board yesterday in Dryden.
“A lot of the competitors all posted personal bests and they were very excited about doing that for the first meet of the year,” noted coach Ilka Milne.
“Now they’ve got a chance to see what they will be up against when they head to NWOSSAA,” she added.
One of the top Muskie performers was Jillian Bobczynski, who finished first in the girls’ long jump and 100m events, and placed third in the 400m race.
She also teamed up with Cassandra Moffitt, Claire Sandelovich, and Jenny Hammond to finish in first place in the 4x100m relay.
Chandler Cousineau, meanwhile, was impressive in the boys’ long-distance events.
He came home in first in the 800m race and finished second in the 1,500m event, with teammate Arthur Van Heil close behind him.
“With all of the events being open to all grades, everyone was going up against students from all of the grades,” Milne explained.
“We had Jacob Empey, who is in Grade 9, go up against athletes who were older than him, and he was very impressive as he finished in first in the long jump and was in second place in the 100m and 400m races,” she noted.
“On the girls’ side, Cassandra Moffitt did very well for being a Grade 10 student in a full field of competitors, as she took third place in the 800m and 1,500m races,” Milne added.
The black-and-gold now are getting ready for the NWOSSAA track-and-field championships set for May 28-29 in Thunder Bay.
