The team results, as a whole, didn’t have them near the top of the charts.
But plenty of individual members of the Muskie track-and-field squad established themselves as credible contenders at the season-opening Bronco Booster Track & Field Invite varsity meet Thursday at Falls High School.
The black-and-gold girls’ squad totalled 64 points to finish fifth out of six schools, with the host Broncos racking up 231 points to top the division.
The minimal five-person Muskie boys’ contingent netted 25 points to finish last in their division, with the Ely Timberwolves taking first place with 185.
Sekina Scheibler, meanwhile, stood out in solo events–capturing two medals and three top-five results out of the 19 the Muskies had in total.
The Grade 11 athlete nabbed silver in the boys’ shot put, tossing a distance of 38 feet and 4.5 inches.
Scheibler, the 2015 OFSAA champion in Midget boys’ shot put, was nosed out of top spot by Willy George of the Warroad Warriors (38′,8″).
He also took bronze in the boys’ high jump with a best leap of 5′,2″, finishing in the middle of a three-way tie-breaker for number of jumps missed that included Armand Barrios of the Broncos (silver) and Muskie teammate Ben Olsen (fourth).
All three finished behind Jacob Bilous of the Dryden Eagles, who soared to a winning mark of 5′,4″.
Scheibler then capped his day with a fourth-place finish in the boys’ discus with a top toss of 111′,3″.
Michael Ryan (Dryden) obliterated the field by more than 18 feet (136′,8″).
A couple of Muskie rookies also were super in bringing back silver Thursday.
Ashlyn Beck, a Grade 8 student at Donald Young School in Emo, part of a large group of Grade 7 and 8 students from the district invited to join this year’s Muskie team, took second place in the girls’ 800m event (2:50.34).
Beck trailed only Grade 10 entrant Sarah Urquhart of Dryden (2:48.59), who topped the 15-runner division that featured athletes up to Grade 12.
Meanwhile, Grade 9 student Grace Petsnick nosed out older sister, Ellie, in a tie-breaker for second place in the girls’ high jump.
Both topped out at 4′,6″ to trail only Grade 12 phenom Lexi Erickson of the Falls (4′,8″) with Grace getting silver.
As well, the Muskie girls’ 4x800m relay team also nabbed bronze (12:27.44).
The Grade 7-9 portion of the Muskies’ crew will be back in the Falls for a junior varsity meet this Friday.
