The Muskies boys’ hockey team got their first NorWOSSA win last night against the Kenora Broncos in a big way.
The black-and-gold scored seven goals on 45 shots while holding the Broncos scoreless on 20 shots to leave the squad 1-2 in NorWOSSA play.
A dominant first period by the Muskies was rewarded with a Lucas Romaniuk goal four minutes before intermission, assisted by Josh Sigurdson.
The second period is when the Muskies turned the game into a clinic. Tyler Pocock got things started two minutes into the frame with a shot from the point, assisted by Mitch Green and Alex McQuarrie.
On the next rush, Brett Meyers wired a slapshot from 25 feet out that went top shelf on the bewildered Broncos’ goalie. Pocock drew the assist.
It took 10 minutes before the Muskies added to their lead as Shaun Egan stepped just inside the blueline and fired home a slapper, assisted by Brett Perreault.
Tyler Miller converted on a breakaway less than a minute later, assisted by Andrew Easton, which closed out the second period with the Muskies up 5-0.
Pocock netted his third point of the night in the third when he squeaked the puck past the Broncos’ goalie, assisted by Justin Larson, the McQuarrie rounded out the scoring less than 30 seconds later.
When the horn sounded ending the game, the scoresheet showed 11 black-and-gold players had notched at least one point in the game. And the team was handed just six minutes in penalties.
First-year goalie Wade Friesen playing a impressive game in his first start for the Muskies this season to earn the shutout.
Second-place Kenora fell to 2-3 with the loss. Dryden remains undefeated in four games to sit atop NorWOSSA while Red Lake rounds out the standings at 1-3.
The Muskies’ next game is this Tuesday (Nov. 30) in Dryden against the front-running Eagles.
But it was a different story for the Muskie girls’ team in Kenora last night, who came out on the short end of a 7-1 decision to the host Broncos.
The Broncos maintained pressure in the Muskie zone in the first period and Kim Pacarenuk did well in not allowing any goals until eight minutes were left in the frame.
Kenora then added three more goals in the second period even though the Muskies controlled the play—firing 15 shots on goal while holding the Broncos to just six.
The Broncos then came out in the third with a new hunger and scored three more times to secure the win. The lone Muskie goal came from captain Kristen Roehrig in front of the net, assisted by Hannah Firth.
The Muskie girls, now 0-2 in NorWOSSA play, next will face the Dryden Eagles up there on Tuesday (Nov. 30).
