There were more rookies than veterans but for their first time out, the newcomers didn’t look half bad.
The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball squad had a productive, if not completely successful, weekend at the eight-team tournament they hosted.
Entering the tournament as two separate teams consisting of three second-year and five first-year players each, the Muskie split squads both won nine of their 12 preliminary-round games.
Fort Frances #1 qualified second in Pool ‘A,’ where they lost 25-22 and 25-10 in the best-of-three semi-finals to the Hillcrest Colts (Thunder Bay).
Meanwhile, Fort Frances #2 finished third in Pool ‘A,’ winning the same number of games as their Muskie teammates and the eventual tournament champion Dryden Eagles, but lost out in the tie-breaker based on points for and against.
“We went in to learn as much as we could,” said Muskie assistant coach Struchan Gilson, who was pleased with the performance of both Fort High teams considering many of the players were getting their first taste of high school competition.
“This is a transition process. We start here to get to somewhere else,” Gilson noted.
Both Muskie girls’ volleyball squads will begin their NorWOSSA regular seasons this Thursday here against the Beaver Brae Broncos, with the seniors up first at 3:30 p.m., immediately followed by the juniors.
