Rainy, chilly weather didn’t come close to cooling off the Muskie boys’ and girls’ soccer teams yesterday in Dryden.
Neither did the absence of both of their regular head coaches.
Both Muskie crews didn’t give up a goal, while each netting nine of their own, in sweeping their respective doubleheaders to improve to 4-0 on the NorWOSSA season and lock up first place.
That ensures a bye to the final for both teams at the NorWOSSA playoffs May 25 in Dryden.
The Muskie boys opened with an 8-0 rout over the Kenora Broncos (1-2-1) before battling to a 1-0 victory against the host Eagles (0-3-1).
Max Williams continued his strong play by notching a hat trick against Kenora.
He then scored the only goal against Dryden on an 18-yard blast with 10 minutes left in the second half.
Kevin Metke chipped in a pair of goals against Kenora while Tyler VanUden, Aaron Bujold, and Cam Lidkea added singles.
Cole Kowalski earned both shutouts in goal.
The Muskie girls, meanwhile, were firing on all cylinders in both games—dumping the Kenora Broncos (0-3-1) by a 5-0 count and then earning a 4-0 win over Dryden (1-2-1).
The goal scorers were not available as of press time.
With yesterday’s one-day strike by local high school teachers, Muskie head coaches Sarah Faragher (girls) and Chris Sinclair (boys) were unable to accompany their teams to Dryden.
Their shoes were filled by assistant coaches Jess Caul and Sara Roach (girls), along with Kaleb Firth (boys).
Both Muskie squads next head to Kenora this weekend.
The girls will play in a tournament while the boys will have exhibition games tomorrow and early Saturday against the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) before facing the Sioux Lookout Warriors that afternoon.
Fort High will wrap up the regular season next Wednesday in Kenora.
But several players from both teams will miss those games due to being away on the FFHS Travel Club’s trip to Italy next week.
