Once they shook off the rust, it was all systems go.
The Muskie girls’ and boys’ soccer teams opened the NorWOSSA regular season here yesterday with a pair of wins apiece achieved in similar fashion.
The girls needed a goal in the 70th minute from Maggie Jean to edge the Dryden Eagles 2-1 in their first game of the day.
Jean’s attempted cross from the top right of the 18-yard box wound up bouncing past Eagles’ goalie Alyssa Deschene and in for the game-winner.
Myla Angus had a first-half tally for the Muskies, with Siobhan Mackintosh earning the win in goal.
The offence then kicked into gear in the Muskies’ afternoon encounter with the Kenora Broncos as the home side blitzed the visitors 5-0.
Claire Hyatt’s penalty kick goal two minutes before halftime put Fort High on the board.
The second half was all Muskies.
Ashley Croswell jammed home a rebound past Broncos’ keeper Mica Wells in the 50th minute before Jessica Baxter made a sliding shot from a difficult angle eight minutes later after she and Janissa Judson’s pressure caused Wells to cough the ball up in the crease.
Hyatt set up Sydney Radigan for a rocket from five yards out in the 76th minute to make it 4-0.
Jessica Steele rounded out the scoring by gathering in the rebound of her own shot and blasting it home just before time expired.
Bryanna Dustin played the first half in goal while Moriah Carradice handled the second in the shared shutout effort.
Meanwhile, the Muskie boys also had their problems with the Eagles in their opener before coming away with a 2-0 victory.
Kevin Metke made good on a penalty kick five minutes into the game to open the scoring.
The Muskies then tacked on an insurance goal in the 65th minute when Max Williams cranked a shot to the opposite side of the net from 15 yards out.
Fort High exerted its dominance over the Broncos early in a 7-0 rout in its second game—grabbing a three-goal lead before the game was 20 minutes old.
Ian Jodoin’s free kick wasn’t corralled by Kenora keeper Wes Penner, with Williams being johnny-on-the-spot to roof the ball in the top right corner only five minutes in.
Jodoin added to the lead three minutes later with a textbook free kick from 35 yards out that sailed just over the head of Penner.
Williams then worked his way through two defenders before feeding an onrushing Joey Angus, who went up the middle of the Kenora box and hammered the ball to the low left corner in the 19th minute.
In the second half, Williams cashed in on a rebound from in tight in the 55th minute.
He then walloped a shot from the left side of the Broncos’ box three minutes later to complete his hat trick.
Jodoin put one in from about the exact same spot two minutes later before Adam Stromberg added the exclamation mark with a 10-yard strike with two minutes to go.
Cole Kowalski, who barely was tested in either game, earned both shutouts.
The Muskie girls next head to Winnipeg for the St. John’s-Ravenscourt tournament tomorrow through Sunday.
Both squads then will head to Dryden next Wednesday to face the Eagles and Broncos again.
