Muskie soccer squads go unbeaten

An undefeated start to their respective NorWOSSA season has both Muskie soccer squads on the path to championship repeats.
The Muskie girls didn’t allow a goal while going 4-0 in the first of two NorWOSSA playoff seeding tournaments last weekend here while the boys’ team strung together a 2-0-2 mark.
The defending NorWOSSA champs opened the weekend with a 5-0 shellacking of the Rainy River Owls on Friday morning. Rebecca Cornell netted a hat trick while Sarah Barton and Kate Basaraba added singles.
The Muskies then toppled the Red Lake Rams 3-0 on Friday evening, with Barton, Basaraba, and Jessica Wilson providing the offence.
Carling Barton, whose penalty shot goal was the difference in a 1- 0 win over the Kenora Broncos on Saturday afternoon, struck again that evening as tallies by herself, Sarah Barton, and Basaraba led the Muskies to a 3-0 victory over the Dryden Eagles in their final game.
The Muskie boys, coming off a NorWOSSA championship and an appearance at the all-Ontarios last year, shot down the Owls 2-0 in their opener Friday, with Matt Basaraba scoring both goals, including one on a penalty shot.
After a 0-0 tie that evening with Red Lake, the black-and-gold battled Kenora to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon. Brian Chambers scored the Muskies’ goal while David Defeo replied for the Broncos.
The boys then finished their weekend with a 2-0 win over Dryden on Saturday evening, with Jeremy Wilson connecting for one of the goals (the other scorer was not available at press time).
Both teams now head to Winnipeg for tournaments this weekend, with the second NorWOSSA seeding event slated May 9-10 in Dryden.
