Muskie ski team shines in Kenora

It was a great day on the trails for the Muskie Nordic skiing team last Wednesday in Kenora.
The nine-member contingent all clocked impressive times at the Mount Evergreen Classic, which was the first race of the NorWOSSA season.
Emma Toriseva and Kayli Machura finished 1-2 in the junior girls’ division with times of 20:09 and 21:18, respectively.
Tori Toriseva was the lone Muskie competitor in the senior girls’ division, placing third with a time of 19:58, while Monika Ruppenstein placed eighth in the Grade 7/8 race (15:09).
William Richards was the top Muskie in the junior boys’ division, placing sixth (19:54).
He was followed by Ray Calder in 10th (26:20) and Tanner Williamson in 12th (30:38).
Joseph Dueck had the best showing among the seniors, winding up ninth (23:42), while Steven Dueck finished in 11th (27:11).
“I’m new to Nordic skiing but I was really impressed,” said Muskie teacher rep John Gibson.
“They are a great group of students and the girls did very well,” he noted.
Up next is the NorWOSSA championships set for Feb. 6 in Atikokan.
The NWOSSAA championships will follow on Feb. 12 in Dryden, with OFSAA slated for Feb. 28-March 1 in Collingwood.
