Muskie senior hoopsters lose consolation final

The Muskie senior boys’ basketball team lost 68-56 to the Kelvin Clippers in the consolation final at the John Taylor Classic in Winnipeg, finishing 1-2 at the eight-team event.
Forward Jamie Algie led the Muskie attack with 19 points but the team lost the lead for good in the second quarter.
“Kelvin had a really good transition game and got to our basket very quickly,” said Muskie co-coach Paul Noonan. “We struggled a little bit in that one.”
As reported in Friday’s Daily Bulletin, the Muskies had opened play with a 77-57 loss to Dakota on Thursday night, which knocked them down to the consolation round.
But the black-and-gold bounced back with a 70-43 win over Miles-Mac on Friday afternoon.
Noonan said the entire bench got a chance to play in that game, including rookie guard Cullen McGinnis, who chipped in with 10 points.
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team competed at the first-annual St. Thomas Aquinas invitational in Kenora over the weekend and finished fourth overall among the 12-team field.
The Muskies lost their best-of-three semi-final match 2-0 to Atikokan.
The girls earned wins against Pelican Falls, Beaver Brae (Kenora), and Red Lake but lost to host Thomas Aquinas and Atikokan in pool play.
And in girls’ hockey, the Muskies dropped to 3-3 on the season after a 7-0 loss to the Kenora Broncos here yesterday.
The Muskie boys’ team (1-5-1) will resume NorWOSSA play this Friday night against the Broncos at the Emo Arena.
