It was the “Turkey Trot” but Jenny Hammond opted for a full gallop.
The Muskie senior runner placed third in a field of 22 with a clocking of 23:06 in the girls’ five-km division at the “Turkey Trot” and U14 cross-country championships yesterday in Dryden.
Hammond went toe-to-toe with Dryden’s Elizabeth Carter before Carter nipped her by three seconds for second place.
Andie Wood of Dryden (19:59) was the winner.
It also was the biggest reason why the Muskie girls’ contingent finished second overall in the team competition with 29 points.
Hailey Beaudry turned in a ninth-place performance (24:42).
Other Muskie results included Sydney Beck in 12th (25:53), Gabi Peters in 14th (26:05), and Tory Beaudry in 16th (28:07).
Meanwhile, Muskie Arthur Van Ael shook off the rust by coming in seventh out of 15 in his season debut in the boys’ five-km run with a mark of 21:35.
Van Ael had been stuck being a spectator until now as he healed from a hip injury he suffered during training over the summer.
Dryden swept the top four spots in the boys’ race, with Jacob Benson taking first place (18:16).
The NWOSSAA championships will be next Wednesday (Oct. 22) in Thunder Bay.
