The two-goal lead is reputed to be the toughest to maintain in hockey.
That apparently applies to the one-set lead in volleyball.
The 14th-seeded Muskies ended their season Friday by losing 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-18, and 25-17) to the sixth-ranked Lockerby Composite School Vikings (Sudbury) in the consolation quarter-finals at the OFSAA ‘AA’ senior boys’ volleyball championships in Dryden.
Fort High went from 1-7 and a loss in the NorWOSSA semi-final last season to a 7-1 regular-season record this year.
That was followed by a silver-medal effort at NorWOSSA and then a memorable NWOSSAA victory over the St. Ignatius Falcons (Thunder Bay).
The black-and-gold went 0-4 at OFSAA but certainly didn’t look out of their league in winning the first set in their final three matches, although they were unable to hold the lead each time.
Meanwhile, the third-ranked Ecole secondaire catholique Franco-Cité Falcons (Ottawa), whom the Muskies put in a good effort against before being swept in two sets in Pool ‘B’ action, ended the dynasty of the top-ranked and eight-time defending champion Eden High School Eagles (St. Catharines).
The Falcons downed the Eagles 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-19, and 25-20) in the championship final.
