Both the Muskie girls’ and boys’ curling rinks had good showings at a NorWOSSA tune-up in Sioux Lookout over the weekend.
Tirzah Keffer, Sam Mueller, Carly Busch, and Andrea Nelson swept through their division with a perfect 3-0 record, beating Red Lake (9-0), Atikokan (9-3), and Kenora (9-2) to claim top spot.
The boys, meanwhile, finished third in their bracket with a 3-2 mark.
They beat Red Lake 7-3, lost to Sioux Lookout 5-4, trounced Rainy River 7-2, fell to St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) 8-2, and then edged the Kenora Broncos 7-6.
The qualifying event was a tune-up for the NorWOSSA showdown in early March, which is set to take place in Kenora.
The top two rinks from that event then will square off with two Thunder Bay reps and two from the North Shore of Superior for a chance to represent the region at the all-Ontarios.
In related news, former Muskie skip Mike Badiuk, now a lead with Dylan Johnston’s rink from the Fort William Curling Club, has advanced to the Canadian Junior Nationals slated for Jan. 31-Feb. 8 in Salmon Arm, B.C.
Johnston’s rink qualified after beating Kory Carr in the final at the provincial playdowns in Elliot Lake..
And Jenna Enge of Devlin, now a member of Sarah Lang’s rink out of the FWCC, also made an appearance in the provincial final in the girls’ division but failed to advance after a 9-3 loss to Vanessa Maroney.
