Springtime in Markham will suit Aaron Bujold just fine, thank you.
The Grade 9 Muskie badminton player booked his ticket to OFSAA there from April 30-May 2 after finishing second in senior boys’ singles at the NWOSSAA finals yesterday in Thunder Bay.
Bujold, needing a top-two finish to advance, went 4-1 to grab the silver medal behind Yaman Malhi (5-0) of the Churchill Bulldogs.
“In all but his last match, Aaron improved his score against his opponents as he observed their weaknesses and took advantage of them,” said Muskie badminton coach Brian Church.
“With the tougher opponents at this level, the games tend to be closer,” he noted.
“Yet Aaron still beat four of his five opponents in two-straight sets.”
Bujold opened play by beating fellow NorWOSSA rep Ryan Dasno (Sioux Lookout Warriors) by scores of 21-19 and 21-13, then downed Saad Masood of the Hammarskjold Vikings (21-17/21-16).
Bujold then had his streak of 16-straight wins in competitive action this season end at the hands of Malhi (21-17/21-16), who is in Grade 11 and had faced Bujold before in open tournaments in Thunder Bay.
But Bujold bounced back to beat Andre Bourgeois of the Manitouwadge Wolverines (21-16/21-10).
He then clinched his OFSAA berth by upending Jeremy Ouelette of the Trillium Coyotes (Chapleau) by scores of 21-11 and 21-18.
