Muskie juniors off to winning start

It’s been quite the start to the season for the Muskie junior boys’ volleyball and girls’ basketball teams.
The junior spikers claimed the title at the Kenora Invitational Tournament over the weekend, downing the Sioux North Warriors in Saturday’s final.
The black-and-gold had opened tourney play Friday with a straight-sets win (25-22/25-20) over the Kenora Broncos before earning a split (27-26/10-25) with the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora).
Then after losing in straight-sets to the Dryden Eagles (19-25/22-25), Fort High swept the Warriors (25-18/25-20) to finish third in pool play.
The Muskies dumped the Broncos 2-1 in the quarter-finals Saturday morning before then beating the Saints in the semis that afternoon to advance to the gold-medal match against the Warriors.
The squad had kicked off NorWOSSA regular-season play here Thursday afternoon with a hard-fought 3-2 win (25-15, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, and 15-12) over the Eagles.
The junior girls’ hoopsters, meanwhile, also were victorious as they cruised to a 41-24 romp over Dryden on Thursday.
Keisha DeBungie scored a team-high 10 points while Anna Gagne added six.
Cassie Krawchuk, Ayiana Gagne, Aurora Hutton, and Justine Linklater chipped in with four each.
As for the seniors, the girls’ basketball team impressed at a one-day tournament in Dryden on Friday after suffering a tough 51-41 loss to the Eagles in their NorWOSSA regular-season opener the previous day.
The black-and-gold went a perfect 4-0 at the tourney to claim first place.
The squad opened play with a 59-28 rout of the Kenora Broncos.
Ellie Petsnick scored a team-high 16 points in that one while Sarah Larson chipped in with 12.
Jamie Spencer, Janissa Judson, and Grace Petsnick each netted six.
Fort High then avenged Thursday’s overtime loss to the Eagles by downing them 50-38 on their home court.
Judson, Larson, and Ellie Petsnick all scored eight points to lead the offence.
Grace Petsnick and Spencer both added four while Simone Payne knocked down a big three-pointer in the win.
The Muskies then rolled to a 58-26 thrashing of St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora), led by Ellie Petsnick’s game-high 14 points.
Larson and Grace Petsnick both scored 10 each while Hailie Beasant, Spencer, and Carmen Hebert added four apiece.
Fort High then capped an undefeated tourney by crushing Ignace 76-42. Judson, Ellie Petsnick, and Grace Petsnick led the way with 14 points each.
Spencer, Rachel Anderson, and Larson all chipped in with six points.
In senior boys’ volleyball play, the Muskies were eliminated in the quarter-finals at the Kenora Invitational Tournament with a straight-sets loss to the host Broncos on Saturday.
Fort High was swept by the Saints (16-25/16-25) and the Westgate Tigers (14-25/19-25) before earning their own sweep versus Manitouwadge (25-14/25-19) to finish third in Pool ‘B’ play on Friday.
The Muskies had opened NorWOSSA regular-season play Thursday with a 3-2 loss (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25, and 10-15) to visiting Dryden.
All four court sports teams resume league action tomorrow against the Broncos in Kenora.
