Muskie hoopsters down Dryden Eagles

The Muskie senior girls’ basketball team improved its NorWOSSA record to 5-0 after a 27-12 victory over the Dryden Eagles there yesterday afternoon.
Trailing 8-6 after the first half, the Muskies turned it up a notch on offence, outchancing and outscoring the Eagles down the stretch.
“Defensively, we played really good even though we came out flat on offence,’ said co-coach Gord McCabe. “We were cautious at the start but then our girls realized they could play with Dryden and dominated play in the second half.”
Laureen Cousineau had a game-high 14 points in the victory.
The Muskies used a man-to-man defence that smothered the Eagles all afternoon and created several offensive opportunities. Still, the black-and-gold were guilty of too many missed chances and should have blown the Eagles out by a wider margin.
“Our defence played them tight and then we went to a zone defence late to make them work for their shots,” said McCabe of their defensive game plan. “We sat underneath and made them take the outside shots.”
But McCabe cautioned the club’s strength, which is normally their height and rebounding ability, was not at its best. Still, he said it was nice to defeat Dryden on the road in their only meeting before the NorWOSSA finals here Nov. 20.
Meanwhile, in junior action, the Muskies jumped out to a commanding 28-11 half-time lead and held on to down the Eagles 39-28. Heather Mihichuk led all Fort scorers with 14 points.
The Muskie boys’ volleyball scores against Pelican Falls were not available as of press time.
