Muskie hockey squads sweep

Both the Muskie boys’ and girls’ hockey squads swept their respective NorWOSSA semi-final series over the weekend.
The boys dominated their best-of-three showdown against the Kenora Broncos, exploding for seven third-period goals in the opener here Friday night en route to a 9-2 victory.
George Halverson and Ryan Witherspoon led the way with two goals each, with Matt Hebert, Matt Beck, Pat Bobczynski, Matt McLellan, and Riley Caul adding singles.
Then yesterday afternoon in Kenora, the Muskies built a 6-0 lead through the midway point of the third period before giving up a late goal to the host Broncos for a 6-1 final.
The Muskie goal scorers were Halverson and Kevin Bobczynski (with two each), Witherspoon, and Zach McCool with singles.
The black-and-gold now advance to the best-of three NorWOSSA final against the Dryden Eagles, who swept the Red Lake Rams 7-4 and 4-0 over the weekend.
On the girls’ side, the Muskies played a hard-fought semi-final series with the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints of Kenora, winning both Friday at home and then yesterday in Kenora.
Fort High opened the best-of-three series with a 6-0 shutout. Lauren Krukoski led the way with a pair of goals while Nina Bird, Carlee Bosma, Deanna Saunders, and Anikka McTavish added singles.
It was a different story yesterday as the host Saints built a 2-1 lead before the Muskies roared back with four-straight goals.
The Saints drew to within 5-3 in the final minute of regulation time, but that was as close as they could get.
Bird and Krukoski both scored twice in that one, with McTavish netting the other Muskie goal.
The Muskies await the winner of the Dryden Eagles-Kenora Broncos semi-final series, which is tied at 1-1. They’ll play the rubber match tomorrow night in Kenora.
Both NorWOSSA finals will open here this Friday (Feb. 29).
