Muskie hockey squads score perfect weekend

The Muskie boys’ hockey team swept the host Pelican Falls Timberwolves by scores of 10-3 on Friday night and 9-1 on Saturday afternoon in a pair of penalty-filled games.
The lowlight of Saturday’s game came with 3:40 left in the second period when Muskie Eric Mosbeck was kicked in the neck by an opponent he was tangled up with while down on the ice that led to a match penalty and game misconduct for the Pelican Falls player.
Mosbeck was not seriously injured on the play.
Justin Larson, Scott Bridgeman, and David Pierce each scored a pair of goals in Friday’s win while David Pollard, Steven Sus, and Mosbeck added singles. Terry Kellar had four assists.
Greg Flewelling ignited the black-and-gold’s offence Saturday, netting a personal season-high of four goals in the contest while Bridgeman added two goals and an assist.
Tanner Kaemingh, Larson, and Mosbeck also scored for the Muskies, who have outscored the Timberwolves 60-5 in four games this year while improving to 11-2 in NorWOSSA play.
The goal scorers for Pelican Falls in both games were not available at press time.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls’ team went toe-to-toe in exhibition play with the International Falls Broncos here Friday night before coming out on top by a 3-1 margin.
Hannah Firth scored the game-winner on a power-play breakaway at 9:45 of the third. Brooke Shabatura also had a goal and an assist while Kristin Roehrig pitched in with an empty-net marker to ice the win.
Goalie Kim Pacarenuk was stellar between the pipes for the Muskies, only surrendering Berri Baron’s third-period goal while making a handful of game-saving stops in the second and third periods.
Both teams will be on temporary hiatus during exam week, with the boys’ returning to action Jan. 31 on the road against the Kenora Broncos—the first of a home-and-home series that will wrap up here Feb. 4.
The girls travel to Roseau for an exhibition clash Jan. 28, before traveling to Kenora to face the Broncos in NorWOSSA action Jan. 31. Their next home game also is Feb. 4 against Kenora.
