Muskie golfers strike for gold

The Muskie golf team took home-course advantage to a whole new level Friday.
With the familiar confines of Kitchen Creek Golf Club providing the backdrop, the black-and-gold obliterated the competition to repeat as the NorWOSSA boys’ team champions.
Fort High carded a combined score of 334 to defeat the runner-up Dryden Eagles by 27 strokes (361), with the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) finishing in third (363).
The win gave the Muskies 10 points for finishing first and a total of 27 for the NorWOSSA season, with the Saints second (22) and the Eagles third (15).
Those three teams, plus the five highest-finishers for the season individually not affiliated with those teams, will move on to the NWOSSAA championships Oct. 3 in Thunder Bay.
Kendyn Faragher’s round of 82 was not only the top Muskies score, but put him in a tie for second overall for the day with Nodin Carlson (St. Thomas Aquinas).
Dryden’s Jacob Lugli topped the field with a 77.
That gave Lugli 295 points for the season to crown him the NorWOSSA individual champ.
Carlson won silver (290) while Faragher claimed the bronze medal (270).
Just behind Faragher on the day, and for the season, was teammate Cole Kowalski, whose round of 83 tied him with fellow Muskie Kaleb Bruyere for fourth in the round.
It also put Kowalski fourth overall for the season (264).
Bruyere finished seventh overall (237) while teammate Mikel Ward was seventh Friday with an 86 to wind up 10th for the season (201).
That put him just in front of Muskie Matthew Gerstner, whose ended the season in 11th (195) after posting a 94 on Friday to place 15th for the day.
Fellow Muskie Aiden Wielinga was 13th both on Friday with a 91 and for the season (171).
Wielinga will also be at NWOSSAA due to finishing third among players not part of a qualifying team.
Gordy Scott, meanwhile, shot his first sub-100 round of the season with a 96 to come in 16th for the round and 23rd on the season (105).
