The Muskie golf team is in position to play at home after all.
“We’re sitting in a good spot going into Red Lake,” Muskie coach Brian Johnstone said after Fort High shot a team score of 338 to end up in third place at the NorWOSSA regular-season finale yesterday in Sioux Lookout.
That was one stroke behind the second-place Kenora Broncos (337).
“It comes down to we have to go to Red Lake and beat Dryden,” Johnstone noted.
The five points for third, however, give the Muskies eight this season—one better than fourth-place Dryden, who managed only a fifth-place showing yesterday (348) to earn two points.
With the top three teams qualifying all their golfers for the NWOSSAA championships Sept. 30 at Heron Landing, it appears the last of those berths will be decided this Tuesday at the NorWOSSA final in Red Lake.
Failing to make the top three means Muskie golfers would have to finish in the top two points-wise individually among those players not affiliated with any of the top three teams to advance to NWOSSAA.
The St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) topped the leaderboard again yesterday, beating the Broncos by 11 shots with a total of 327.
Tyson-Skylar Morrisseau led the Muskies with a third-place showing overall with a round of 77.
That was just two shots behind Trey Palermo (Broncos) and Owen Stebnitsky (Saints), with Palermo getting the tie-breaker nod on a countback.
“Tyson had 17 great holes and one hole I think he’d like to have back,” Johnstone said about Morrisseau’s struggles on the first hole of the nine-hole course.
Fellow Muskie Graeme Kitt, who didn’t play in the season-opener in Kenora, looked the furthest thing from a rookie in his first high school tournament as he nabbed sixth place with a round of 80.
Kendyn Faragher shot 90 to sit tied with Hosea Mamakwa (Sioux Lookout) for 17th while Sheldon Jourdain Jr. was one shot behind in 19th.
Brandon Morrison placed 27th after a 102 yesterday while Cam Gushulak and Jordan Brown (Saints) were dead even in 28th with 104s.
Sheldon Kelly Jr. did not make the trip to Sioux Lookout due to a previous hockey commitment.
