Muskie golfers look to improve

The Muskie golf team has gotten its feet wet in a pair of tournaments earlier this month, and now is looking forward to another pair in Kenora today and tomorrow that mark the halfway point in the season.
The black-and-gold is hoping to break away on the links after a pair of middle-of-the-pack finishes—including third of seven at their home tournament at Heron Landing, followed by a sixth of 11 finish over in International Falls.
Muskie coach Greg Ste. Croix didn’t hesitate when asked if he expects better scores this week in Kenora.
“Absolutely,” he insisted.
“We’ll see how it goes [today],” he added. “If they line it up the first day, we’ll be looking for [a string of strong finishes].”
He stressed a need for consistent play for the team to achieve better scores.
The Muskies posted a 346 total at their host tournament back on May 8, followed by a 349 the following day in the Falls.
Ste. Croix admitted those results were disappointing and below his expectations.
“I think we could’ve done better,” he said. “I was pretty surprised with scores on the second day [in the Falls].
“We could’ve scored better. We didn’t.”
While Ste. Croix couldn’t comment too much on progress made by individual golfers in the interim (players are “pretty independent” from the team in terms of training and practice), he had hoped to see scores in the mid-70s to mid-80s once the short season got into full swing.
