The Muskie girls’ hockey team got a rare first-hand look at a losing streak and decided it didn’t suit them.
Annalise Hayes scored twice, and Calie Clendenning recorded the shutout, as the Muskies blanked the host St. Thomas Aquinas Saints 5-0 in NorWOSSA play last night.
Fort High (5-2) entered the game after losing back-to-back games for only the second time this season.
The Muskies fell 4-0 to the host Dryden Eagles a week ago, then dropped a 4-3 decision to the International Falls Broncos in exhibition action here Monday night.
Taylor Croswell netted the lone goal of the first period last night before Fort High broke free for three in the second.
Jessica Coran doubled the lead before captain Amy Penner stretched the advantage to 3-0 over the Saints, whom the Muskies beat 4-0 in the final of Fort High’s home tourney earlier this season.
Hayes then got in on the action, notching her first of the night before the end of the frame.
She then netted her second for the only goal of the third.
Clendenning was perfect on the night, though long stretches of intense forechecking by her teammates in the offensive zone kept her from being challenged too often.
The Muskies were slated to host the Kenora Broncos tonight but that game has been postponed due to the Broncos being decimated by injuries and illness.
The game may be rescheduled for a later date, although it will end up as a forfeit victory for the Muskies if contest can’t be fit in before the playoffs begin Feb. 17.
Next up for Fort High is an exhibition rematch against the Silver Bay Mariners (Mn.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Couchiching Arena.
The Muskies pounded the Mariners 10-1 in Silver Bay back on Nov. 22.
The Fort Frances U14 girls’ team first will square off with the junior varsity Mariners at 12:30 p.m. at “The Duke.”
