Thanks to Amber Jourdain’s overtime goal, the Muskie girls’ hockey team started its 2012/13 season by capturing the Sturgeon Heights tournament in Winnipeg on the weekend with a 3-2 victory over the Kenora Broncos.
The black-and-gold advanced to the final after a 3-0 shutout over their NorWOSSA rivals from Dryden in the semi-finals yesterday morning.
Fort High opened the tournament by routing the Vincent Massey Trojans (Winnipeg) 12-2 on Friday evening, but dropped their second game in Pool ‘C’ to the Red Lake Rams 3-2 on Saturday.
But the Muskies bounced back in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over the Dakota Lancers (Winnipeg) that night, which set the stage for Sunday’s run to the championship.
Next up for the black-and-gold is their home tournament this weekend, which gets underway Friday at 1 p.m. against the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora).
Fort High also will play the Sturgeon Heights Huskies (Winnipeg) at 5:15 p.m. on Friday before concluding their round-robin slate against the Portage Saints and Red Lake Rams on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.
The tournament will conclude Sunday, with the consolation game going at 8:45 a.m.
The bronze-medal game is slated for 10:15 a.m., followed by the gold-medal game at 12:45 p.m.
