Muskie girls win tourney

It was a “Classic” case of playing one’s best hockey at the right time.
The Muskie girls’ hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the third period yesterday to earn a 4-1 win over the Lord Selkirk Royals (Winnipeg) and capture the ‘A’-side title at the 2016 Husky Classic tournament.
After Jillian Calder’s second-period goal opened the scoring, the Royals tied the game a minute into the third.
But Kelsey Langtry netted the go-ahead tally, with Siobhan Mackintosh and Taylor Croswell tacking on insurance markers.
Sydney Beck earned the win in goal after missing the first game of the tournament due to illness.
Fort High tied the Shaftesbury Titans 3-3 with a last-second goal in their opening game Thursday, then beat the Oak Park Raiders (Winnipeg) 6-1 and the Sioux Lookout Warriors 3-0 to finish first in Pool #1.
The Muskies later dumped the Vincent Massey Trojans (Winnipeg) 4-1 in the crossover semi-final.
Eight teams competed in the girls’ division.
In the 16-team boys’ division, meanwhile, the Muskies skated away with the ‘B’-side title yesterday with a 7-3 romp over the College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens (Winnipeg).
Cam Gushulak had a hat trick while Cole Allan, Landon Woods, Jon Busch, and Kendyn Faragher added singles.
Matt Booth earn the win in goal.
Fort High blanked the Garden City Gophers (Winnipeg) 8-0, then downed the Steinbach Sabres 5-1.
Vincent Massey relegated the Muskies to the ‘B’ side, though, with a 7-3 win to leave the black-and-gold in second place in Pool #1.
Chase McGuire led all Muskies with 13 points in five games, including two assists in the ‘B’ final.
The Muskie girls will be back at it this weekend when they host the three-day Scott Clendenning Memorial Showcase beginning Friday.
As for the boys, they’re off until heading east Nov. 4-6 for a three-game exhibition series against the Thunder Bay Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Kings.
