Muskie girls win thriller Boys to host Falls tonight

The Muskie girls’ hockey team has arrived!
No longer content to just stay in games, the black-and-gold once again showed last night they won’t be denied this season—earning a thrilling last-minute 2-1 victory over the Baudette Bears in Rainy River.
The Muskies earlier had beaten the International Falls Broncos 3-1 in exhibition action, then took the Dryden Eagles to overtime in their NorWOSSA opener last week before falling 4-3.
Baudette grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the second period on a quick wrister that eluded veteran Kim Pacarenuk, who had to play (she’s the only goalie) despite having trouble with both knees.
The fast and furious match continued with the Bears holding the lead until the 2:28 mark of the second period when Muskie blueliner Danielle O’Sullivan ripped a blast from the right point to even the score at 1-1.
Veteran forward Courtney Caldwell was scrumming in front of the net on the game-tying goal and suffered a back injury that required medical attention, but word later was that she was fine.
The game—played before a big crowd at the Rainy River Arena—culminated with the biggest goal of the season thus far for the Muskies when 14-year-old Kelsey McLain rifled home a well-placed pass from captain Kristen Roehrig with 43 seconds left to secure the win.
The Muskies will be looking to carry the momentum into Kenora this Thursday when they take on the defending NorWOSSA champion Broncos.
The girls play at 7:30 p.m. in Keewatin while the boys’ game goes at 5 p.m. at the Kenora Rec Centre.
Meanwhile, the Muskie boys will take to the ice tonight at the Ice for Kids Arena for an exhibition game against the International Falls Broncos. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
The Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ team will get the night started at 6 p.m. in the ‘52 Canadians Arena when they host the Broncos’ junior varsity team.
