The Muskie girls’ soccer team captured the NorWOSSA crown with a 2-0 win over the host Kenora Broncos in the final Thursday.
They now will host the NWOSSAA showdown next Saturday (May 26), with a berth to the all-Ontarios on the line. It’s not known yet who they will face here.
Meanwhile, the news wasn’t good for the Muskie boys’ squad, who lost 2-0 to the Dryden Eagles in the semi-finals Thursday to be bounced from further contention.
In girls’ action, Shannon Koval scored the winning goal early in the second half on a corner kick from Chrissy Thomson. Sarah Noonan later added the insurance marker.
The girls had reached the final after blanked St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) 3-0 in the semi-finals earlier yesterday. They had advanced to the playoffs after dumping Dryden 5-0 and Sioux Lookout 9-0 in pool play on Wednesday.
Noonan led the Muskie attack during the tournament with six goals. Koval added four, Trista Barker had three, while Thomson and rookie Miranda Miller netted two each.
Carling Barton and Marina Boileau adding one apiece.
Despite the offensive punch, head coach Struchan Gilson said this morning that their defence was the key to victory.
“Our whole back three played tremendously,” Gilson said of Barton, Lindsay Roy, and Megan Canfield.
Unfortunately, the boys were not so lucky. After cruising through pool play Wednesday with wins over Sioux Lookout (8-1) and Red Lake (2-0), the top-seeded Muskies were upset 2-0 by Dryden in the semi-finals yesterday.
Two scrums in front of the net cost them a goal and a penalty kick.
The Kenora Broncos went on to win NorWOSSA gold over Dryden in the final later Thursday.
Muskie goal scorers during the tournament included Adam McTavish, Nathan Miller, and Matt Basaraba (two each), and Bryce Witherspoon, Jamie Algie, Rick Ricard, and Kyle Perry (one apiece).
