Muskie girls win nail-biter

Staff

It was an old-fashioned shootout at the Ice for Kids Arena here Tuesday night—with the Muskie girls’ hockey team still standing at the end.
Miranda Kellar scored twice in regulation time, and then added another in the shootout, as the black-and-gold topped the Kenora Broncos 6-5 to improve to 3-1 in NorWOSSA play.
Four times the Broncos took one-goal leads, only to see Fort High battle back.
A wild first period saw the teams knotted at 3-3 at the intermission, then the teams traded goals in the next two periods to go to overtime tied at 5-5.
Jessica Taggart, Jessie Baker, and Lindsey Roehrig also scored in regulation while Jillian Langtry added a goal in the shootout.
Bronco captain Kelsey Craven led the visitor’s attack with two goals while Julie Cain, Sam Smith, and Brittany Sherred netted the others.
The teams had met twice during the seventh-annual Northern Shield Girls’ High School Hockey Classic over the weekend in Dryden, splitting the games, and plenty of bad blood carried over into this one as the teams combined for 18 penalties.
The Muskies now have won all three regular-season games so far against Kenora, also beating the Broncos back on Nov. 14 (3-2) and then again Nov. 18 (7-2).
The black-and-gold next host the International Falls Broncos in an exhibition game tomorrow (Dec. 5) at 5:15 p.m.
