Muskie girls win in Eveleth

There’s nothing like a Friday night in Eveleth, Mn. to restore your shooting eye, ambush your coach with snowballs, and send a local restaurant into a frenzy.
The Muskie girls’ hockey team delivered a scintillating performance Friday night at the Eveleth Hippodrome, firing 50 shots on goal en route to a 5-0 shutout.
The win also included dousing coach Chris Hill with snow, and arriving at a Virginia restaurant with a bus full of hungry gals just moments after they had fed two busloads from International Falls.
All in all, it was a great night for the black-and-gold as they let loose with their most dominant performance of the season.
The line of Sarah O’Sullivan, Katie McTavish, and Miranda Kellar drew first blood with a tic-tac-toe power-play goal with just over four minutes left in the first period.
O’Sullivan tapped in a rebound, with Kellar and McTavish drawing assists, as the team outshot Eveleth 15-1 in the opening period.
The Muskies went up 2-0 six minutes in to the second as Cortney Caldwell pounced on a rebound from Ashley Whalen’s point shot and fired home a 20-foot wrister.
Then with 7:03 left in the second, Caldwell’s persistence in the offensive zone paid off again as she lifted the stick of an Eveleth defender, stole the puck, and fired a quick shot on goal.
Hannah Firth tapped in the rebound for the third Muskie goal, with Kristen Roehrig also earning an assist.
The third period was all Fort Frances as they outshot the Golden Bears 20-3.
Deanna Saunders made it 4-0 as she broke in on a two-on-one with Kelsey McLean, electing to bury a hard wrist shot top shelf on the stick side. Ashley Whalen registered her second assist of the night on the goal.
Firth then closed out the scoring with her second of the game 15 minutes into the third period after she gobbled up another Caldwell rebound.
The Golden Bears, whose team consists of players from Eveleth, Gilbert, and Virginia, and the Muskies hope to play on a more regular basis in future years.
In related news, the Muskie boys’ exhibition game here Saturday afternoon was cancelled when Red Lake Falls could not make it.
Next up, the Muskie girls will host Silver Bay this Saturday while the boys entertain the Thunder Bay ‘AAA’ Midget Kings on Saturday at 7 p.m. and again Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
