Muskie girls win, boys finish third

The Muskie girls’ soccer team heads into this weekend’s NorWOSSA playoffs here as the top seed after finishing 3-0-1 at a tournament last week in Kenora.
The girls opened play Wednesday with a 6-0 drubbing over Dryden, paced by goals from Laureen Cousineau (two), Lynn Pollard, Lindy Holt, Tanya Hughes, and Carrie Selin.
Then after playing Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) to a 0-0 draw later Wednesday, the Muskies again opened it up offensively by dumping Sioux Lookout 6-0 the following day.
Selin scored twice in that win while Caylee Brow, Cousineau, Christin Thomson, and Sarah Vanderplaats also scored.
The Muskies then closed out the tournament with a 1-0 win over Beaver Brae (Kenora). Cousineau got the lone goal on a breakaway midway through the first half.
Fort Frances and Thomas Aquinas both finished with 6-0-2 records overall but the Muskies were awarded the top seed based on their better goals for and against ratio.
That top seeding means the girls will be in Pool ‘A’ along with Sioux Lookout and Rainy River. The other pool will feature Dryden, Thomas Aquinas, Beaver Brae, and Red Lake.
In boys’ action, the black-and-gold lost three of four games last week in Kenora to drop down to the third seed heading into the NorWOSSA playoffs this weekend.
The Muskies were blanked 3-0 by the first-place Dryden Eagles to open play, then were edged 2-1 by Thomas Aquinas.
Jeff Savage scored the lone Muskie goal in that one.
The Muskies routed Sioux Lookout 6-0 (no goal scorers were available) but then they closed out the tournament later Thursday with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Beaver Brae.
Based on their third-place finish, the Muskies will be pooled with Beaver Brae, Red Lake, and Rainy River this weekend.
The other pool will feature Dryden, Thomas Aquinas, and Sioux Lookout.
