Muskie girls to face alumni in annual showdown

The Muskie girls’ alumni will be out in full force tomorrow night as they take on the current hockey team at the Ice for Kids Arena.
The alumni staged a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind victory last year—riding the hot hand of Cortney Caldwell, who lit the lamp three times, while relying on the stingy netminding of Megan Bob and Kim Pacarenuk, who slammed the door numerous times on the young guns.
The Muskies have been enjoying a well-deserved rest after suiting up no less than 33 times over the first two months of the season.
Despite a bout with December fatigue, the black-and-gold sport a remarkable 22-9-2 record thus far thanks to a balanced scoring attack, solid defence, and great goaltending.
On the alumni side, the group continues to grow since the Muskie girls’ program began in the 1999-2000 season. Many of the former players have embarked on careers, continue with post-secondary education, or started families of their own.
Tomorrow night’s game will feature a cross-section of players spanning from the original team to last year’s squad.
Although the alumni lineup is subject to change, past players expected to suit up include Jennifer Caul, Trista (Barker) Russell, Dianna Redford, Kim Pacarenuk, MacKenzie Caul, Ashley Whalen, Danielle O’Sullivan, Katie McTavish, Megan Bob, Carly Holt, and Cortney Caldwell.
A strong contingent of players from last year’s club also will take the ice, including Jess Barker, Erin Kaemingh, Deanna Saunders, Nina Bird, Katie Stearns, Nicole Beadle, and Lauren Pierce.
The alumni also will have several former mentors behind the bench as (schedules permitting) Mark LaFleur, Darwin Woods, and Greg Madill will take the reins.
The game is included as part of the Muskies’ schedule so season ticket-holders will be admitted free of charge.
All others attending are asked to make a silver collection donation to help offset game expenses.
The puck drops at 7:15 p.m., with the alumni having open ice beforehand to work out the kinks and prepare for the game.
