Muskie girls set precedence for season

The Muskie girls’ hockey team laid a 13-0 shellacking on the Babbitt Knights in exhibition action here Friday night.
Forward Katie McTavish got the ball rolling at 9:53 of the first period when she tapped one in to make it 1-0. Then just two minutes later, Lauren Krukoski put the Muskies up by two after taking a clean pass from McTavish.
Krukoski got her second of the game again at 6:12 of the first.
The Muskies jumped ahead 4-0 when Cassandra Cochrane brought the puck up through centre and then made a nice pass to Lauren Pierce, who found the back of the net with 3:52 left in the first period.
Sarah O’Sullivan kept the Muskies rolling in the second when she made a solid pass to Jessica Barker, who scored at the 15:29 mark. Hannah Firth and Nicki Mosbeck then set up a nice play to allow Krukoski to notch her hat trick to make it 6-0.
After Hayen Labbe, assisted by Cochrane, and Miranda Kellar made it 8-0, Krukoski netted her fourth goal of the game before Taylor Meyers scored to give the black-and-gold a 10-0 lead.
And it wasn’t over yet. Danielle O’Sullivan and her younger sister, Sarah, both scored late in the second to make it 12-0 heading to the third.
McTavish tallied her second of the game, assisted by Krukoski, at 10:55 of the third to round out the scoring.
Sarah Hoskins earned the shutout in goal.
Although the team received a great ego boost as a result of its lopsided victory, it’s obvious there are certain things the players still need to work on to continue their momentum.
“We’re trying to work on our patience in the offensive zone,” noted Muskie head coach Lynn Kellar. “The girls had a chance to do that tonight.”
The Muskie girls return to NorWOSSA action tomorrow when they host the Kenora Broncos at 7:30 p.m. at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
