The Muskie girls’ curling team, skipped by Amy Nielson, jumped out to a 2-0 start at the NorWOSSA curling championships which wrap up today at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
The team, which includes third Courtney Beadle, second Jenna Enge, and lead Kate Bondett, opened play yesterday with an impressive 11-3 win over Queen Elizabeth (Sioux Lookout).
They followed that with an 8-1 win over Dryden.
The girls next hit the ice at 11:30 a.m. today against Red Lake (results were not known by press time), then were to meet Kenora at 2:30 p.m.
A playoff, if necessary, is slated for 5:30 p.m.
The Red Lake Rams also were undefeated at 2-0 going into play today.
In boys’ action, the Muskies (2-1) were tied for second place with Kenora in the six-rink field going into action today.
The team, which consists of skip David Kaun, third Mike Badiuk, second Lucas Keffer, lead Mike McKay, and spare Mike Sande, had opened with a 7-4 win over Dryden yesterday.
They lost 5-1 loss to Kenora, but then bounced back with a narrow 6-5 win over Rainy River.
Red Lake was leading the standings at 3-0 heading into play today.
The Muskies next played Sioux Lookout at 11:30 a.m. today (results were not known at press time), then were to face Red Lake at 2:30 p.m.
A playoff, if needed, is slated for 5:30 p.m.
The top two teams in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions will advance to the NWOSSAA championships, which will be held in Nipigon Red Rock.
And in mixed action, in which Fort High does not have a team, Atikokan (3-0) led the six-rink field at last report.
