Muskie girls lose opener

The Muskie girls’ hockey team lost their opening game at the Minnesota Girls Holiday Cup tournament last night at the Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine, Mn., falling 5-3 to the Long Prairie-Wadena-Deer Creek Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring at 5:43 of the first period on a goal by Lacy Ostendorf, then they made it 2-0 after Amanda McManigle beat Muskie goalie Kim Pacarenuk at 14:16 of the first.
The Muskies cut the Blue Devils’ lead in half 30 seconds into the second period with a goal from Katie McTavish, assisted by Steph Strachan and Tara Lloyd.
But the Blue Devils struck back quickly when Angie Johnson tallied at 3:14 of the second. Ostendorf and Johnson then each potted their second goals of the game before the halfway point of the period to give the Blue Devils a 5-1 lead.
The black-and-gold once again opened a new period with a goal when Darcy Smith, from Krystine Marchuk and McKenzie Caul, scored just 1:11 into the third.
Marchuk then narrowed the Blue Devils’ lead to two by scoring unassisted at 5:32 of the third. But that was as close as the black-and-gold would get.
The Muskies next face-off against St. Bernard’s today at 6:15 p.m. (St. Berard’s was blanked 9-0 in their opener against Moose Lake), then will suit up again Saturday at 6:15 p.m. against Andover, who also lost its first game.
