Win or call it a season.
That’s the predicament facing the Muskie girls’ hockey team as they head into a third-and-deciding game tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in their NorWOSSA semi-final series with the Kenora Broncos.
The Broncos evened the series yesterday with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory on home ice, getting a late third-period goal from Sam Smith and then the overtime winner off her stick to stave off elimination.
Miranda Kellar had the lone Muskie goal in the third period in what was a chippy game with the teams combining for 22 penalties.
The series-opener Friday night at the ’52 Canadians Arena looked bleak with the Muskies facing a 3-1 deficit after two periods of play, but a complete turnaround resulted in four goals in just over three minutes.
Jillian Langtry got the party started when she blew by the Broncos’ defence and snapped a shot short side past goalie Stephanie Ferguson.
Then less than two minutes later, Courtney Easton spotted Kristen Penner camped off to the side of the Broncos’ goal—and she converted on a one-timer to knot the score at 3-3.
Jessie Baker gave the Muskies their first lead when she poked home a loose puck off a scramble out front a minute-and-a-half later, then Penner set up Kailey Curtis all alone in the slot just 15 seconds later to cap off the remarkable comeback.
Layne Lampshire scored with under two minutes to play to draw the Broncos within one, but the Muskies held them at bay the rest of the way.
Taylor Meyers also scored for the Muskies while Kelsey Craven, Erica Johnson, and Linnea Vaudry netted the other goals for the visitors.
The winner of tomorrow’s game advances to the best-of-three NorWOSSA final against the first-place Dryden Eagles.
The Muskie boys, meanwhile, wrapped up their NorWOSSA semi-final series against the Kenora Broncos with an 10-2 win last night after taking the opener by a 5-3 score on Thursday.
Mike Jourdain, Blake Wepruk, and Zach McCool netted two goals apiece while Ryan Shortreed, Brett McMahon, Kyle Herr, and Taylor Jorgenson added singles.
The black-and-gold now face Dryden in the best-of-three NorWOSSA final after the Eagles eliminated the Red Lake Rams in the other semi-final series.
