Muskie girls exact revenge on Broncos

The Muskie girls exacted some revenge Tuesday night.
The black-and-gold battled back from an early deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over visiting Kenora—making up for a 7-1 thrashing they received from the Broncos just prior to the Christmas break.
Despite forgetting to bring their uniforms (they suited up in BDO Stars duds), the Broncos brought their ‘A’ game to town and struck first, leading 1-0 after one period.
Taylor Meyers knotted the score at 1-1 with the lone goal of the second period, then had several more chances to give the Muskies a lead but was stonewalled by Broncos’ goalie Stephanie Ferguson.
The score remained tied until Lauren Krukoski put the Muskies ahead for good on a power play late in the third period.
Jillian Langtry made it 3-1 a few minutes later, which proved to be a key insurance marker as the Broncos netted one with 21 ticks on the clock to close out the scoring.
The Muskies, now 4-2-0-1 in NorWOSSA play, are in Emo tonight to face the Lake of the Woods Bears (Baudette) in an exhibition game.
The Muskie boys, meanwhile, made mince meat of the visiting Ely Timberwolves in a 10-0 trouncing that same night.
Fort High got first-period goals from Josh Scott, Ryan Shortreed, Zach McCool, Kyle Herr, Brendan Cawston, and Cody McCool, then coasted the rest of the way.
Herr added another later in the game while Matt Goldamer, Chris Cousineau, and Ryan Shortreed rounded out the scoring.
Coupled with a 12-0 win over the Timberwolves back on Dec. 9 in Ely, the Muskies outscored the Minnesota club 22-0 in their two-game exhibition showdown.
The Muskies overwhelmed the visitors with some big hits throughout the game, too.
The win came at a cost, however, as forward Donovan Cousineau (who scored four goals in the recent Duluth tournament) took a knee-on-knee hit in the third period and had to helped off the ice by his teammates.
Fortunately, the injury might not be as severe as initially feared, with Muskie head coach Shawn Jourdain saying Cousineau was instructed to rest it for four days and then will have it re-evaluated early next week.
The Muskies next host the West Kildonan Collegiate Wolverines (Winnipeg) in a pair of exhibition games tomorrow and Saturday. The puck drops at 7:30 both nights.
The series was a late addition to the Muskies’ schedule, making up for the cancellation of the Tournament of Champions in Winnipeg.
The Muskies went 5-1 in last year’s marquee event in the Manitoba capital, including big wins over Shattuck St. Mary’s 4-3 and St. John’s Ravenscourt 5-4 during the medal round.
The black-and-gold later lost 3-0 in the final against the St. Paul’s Crusaders.
Fort High sports a 6-1 mark in NorWOSSA play, and will have their first league test in nearly a month when the Dryden Eagles come to town next Tuesday (Jan. 13).
The Eagles (4-1-0-1) opened up the second half of the season with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Kenora Broncos (2-4) on Tuesday night, giving up two power-play goals late and then the eventual shootout winner on home ice.
Dryden handed Fort High its only league loss in the season-opener back on Nov. 12 with a 5-2 win, but the Muskies got redemption Nov. 25 with a 3-2 decision.
