The revamped lineup and coaching staff of the Muskie girls’ hockey team had their first audition of the young season at their home tournament over the weekend—and passed with flying colours en route to the silver medal.
The black-and-gold dropped a 3-1 decision to the Pembina Tigers in yesterday afternoon’s final after winning their first four games to get there.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held that advantage going to the third period.
Erika Anderson scored on an unassisted effort with nine minutes to play to close the gap, but the hosts could get no closer.
The squad had opened round-robin play Friday afternoon with a sound 5-2 win over St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora).
Jillian Langtry, Taylor Dixon, Jesse Baker, Danielle Jean, and Courtney Easton all found the back of the net while Melissa Payne earned the win in goal.
The Muskies then continued their fine play Friday night with a 2-0 blanking of Red Lake.
After a scoreless opening period, Carlee Bosma struck for the game’s first goal early in the second.
Langtry added another before the end of the period, with Dana Cridland putting the clamps down between the pipes to record the shutout.
On Saturday morning, the black-and-gold faced off against the eventual-champion Tigers and claimed a narrow 3-2 win.
Langtry set the tone early with a goal just over a minute in, and the 1-0 score remained that way until early in the third when Pembina notched the equalizer.
Baker put the Muskies back out in front at the six-minute mark. Then with Pembina having pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, Langtry added an empty-netter to put the game out of reach.
Pembina did score with 11 seconds left, but it was a classic case of too-little-too-late.
Fort High then wrapped up round-robin play with an offensive explosion Saturday night, routing the Miller Aces of Altona, Man. 7-2.
The line of Baker, Dixon, and Alyssa Penner had the hot hand in this one, combining for five goals and five assists.
Baker and Dixon each netted two goals and an assist while Penner had a goal and three helpers.
Langtry and Shae-Lynn Smith tallied the other Muskie goals.
The squad opens NorWOSSA play Friday, Nov. 13 against the host Kenora Broncos.
