Muskie girls drop opener

After medalling at two pre-season tournaments, the Muskie girls’ hockey team was looking for a positive start to the NorWOSSA regular season.
Unfortunately for the black-and-gold, it didn’t come Saturday night as the Muskies fell 3-2 to the Red Lake Rams at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Despite playing their second game in as many nights, the Rams came out flying here—ringing up a 3-0 lead in the first period.
Moments before the opening goal, the Muskies had an excellent scoring chance of their own when Taylor Dixon took a drop pass from Jillian Langtry but her shot for the top corner was denied.
The Muskies struck back before the period was through, however, as Danielle Jean’s shot from the left circle beat the Rams’ goalie to pull Fort High to within 3-1.
Langtry struck minutes later, taking a centering pass from Shae-lynn Smith and roofing a shot off the crossbar and in.
The Muskies had a couple of chances to notch the equalizer in the second period, when Fort High carried the play.
Alyssa Penner’s quick shot off of Ericka Tymkin’s centering pass caromed just off the side of the net while Smith’s deflection of a Shelby Rea shot was gloved down.
The third period also was scoreless.
Fort High (0-1) will look to right itself tomorrow night when they visit the Kenora Broncos.
Kenora opened the NorWOSSA season with a 7-0 pasting of the Dryden Eagles over the weekend.
