The Muskie girls’ soccer team yesterday clinched first place and a berth in the NorWOSSA final here next Wednesday.
The black-and-gold (4-2) opened play in Kenora with a 3-0 victory over the Dryden Eagles on goals by Kelsey Quibell, Courtney Roach, and Allison Brown.
“That was our goal [yesterday]—to win that first game and then be able to take it easy for Game 2,” Muskie coach Sarah Noonan said.
“We are exactly where we want to be going into next week.”
The win came with a cost, however, as Muskie defender Anikka McTavish suffered a suspected broken leg in the final minutes of the game and likely will be lost for the rest of the season.
The squad then went into their afternoon tilt against the host Broncos with little urgency, falling 3-0.
The Eagles beat the Broncos (both 2-3-1) in the day’s other match-up, and will face each other again in the NorWOSSA semi-final here next Wednesday.
That winner then will play the Muskies for a berth at the all-Ontarios on June 4-6 in Kenora.
As OFSAA host this year, the Broncos have an automatic bye into the event—meaning the Eagles will be looking to steal the second berth with a win over Fort High should they advance to the league final.
The Muskie boys, meanwhile, got the monkey off their backs on a pair of fronts yesterday in Kenora in their final matches of the regular season.
Not only did they score their first goal in five tries against the top-seeded Broncos, they also beat them for the first time this year with a 2-1 victory.
The black-and-gold (2-3-1) tied the Eagles 1-1 in their other game yesterday, who they will face in the NorWOSSA semi-final here next Wednesday.
The Muskies will be hoping to advance to face the Broncos one more time for the right to go to the all-Ontarios on June 4-6 in Hamilton.
