Muskie girls capture fourth at Schwan Cup

The beginning was promising, but when the offence faded away, so did the victories.
The Muskie girls’ hockey team posted a 1-2 record to finish fourth overall at the Schwan Cup tournament in Minneapolis, which incorporated the field from the former Minnesota Holiday Cup Classic.
Fort High edged Rosemount 2-1 in their first outing, with Kim Pacarenuk standing tall between the pipes to give her team the chance to eke out the win.
Captain Kristin Roehrig set up Carly Holt for the only marker of the first period to put Fort High out front. Hannah Firth then converted Kerry Hyatt’s pass at 2:34 of the second to make it a two-goal bulge.
Ashley Kaye put a scare into the locals with a goal early in the third period, but the Muskies tightened the defensive screws to ward off Rosemount’s attack until the final buzzer.
The win put them into the ‘A’-side semi-finals, where they were defeated 5-1 by Bismarck (N.D.)
After a scoreless first period, Kari Loftwich put Bismarck up four minutes into the second. Mackenzie Caul replied 1:44 later to make it 1-1, but the North Dakota crew scored four unanswered goals to ice the win.
Katie Mahon took the steam out of the Muskies with her goal just seven seconds before the period expired. Jade Schirado then netted a pair four minutes apart early in the third before Courtney Meland rounded out the scoring.
In the ‘A’-side consolation game, the Muskies’ offence was smothered by a tough defensive scheme put forth by Prior Lake, which skated to a 3-0 triumph.
The Prior Lake goal scorers were unavailable at press time.
Chisago Lakes downed Bismarck 3-1 to capture the overall tourney crown.
