The Muskie football team will soon be making a return to the gridiron for training camp, tentatively scheduled to start Aug. 24.
“[A later start] should help us get more guys into training camp,” offensive coordinator Andrew George conceded.
The camp will run Monday-Thursday evenings beginning at 6 p.m. until school begins the following week.
“It looks like we won’t have more than five practices without some sort of bussing system since school starts on Sept. 1,” George noted. “We just want to get that word out, so players can begin to speak to their employers and give them a heads up for the first week of practice.”
George said it’s crucial to get everyone on the same page before throwing them into game action unprepared.
“I can’t stress enough how important it is to get a full team out for that first week of practice,” George said. “There is so much preparation in football, I dare say more than any other team sport.
“Both from a safety standpoint, and a competitive standpoint, it’s important for each player to get a certain amount of practice in before they start playing,” George continued.
“It also helps cut practice times once the season starts, just for the fact that we no longer have to go over teaching as many football fundamentals during the season, [and] we can just work at fine-tuning them.
